Waste Pickers’ Day – An Interview With Bharati Chaturvedi from Chintan Environmental Research & Action Group

Interviewee: Bharati Chaturvedi

Interviewer: Swetha Dandapani

March 1st is commemorated as Global Waste Pickers’ Day in memory of a massacre in Colombia where 11 workers were brutally murdered in 1992. To commemorate the Global Waste Pickers’ Day, we organized a Twitter interview with Bharati Chaturvedi, the founder & director of Chintan Environmental Research & Action Group to discuss the issues faced by waste pickers in India.

Chintan, an organisation based in India works for environmental justice in partnership with people and groups from diverse sections of society with focus on ensuring equitable and sustainable production & consumption of materials, and improved disposal of waste. Chintan has anchored its work in grassroots partnerships with organizations of the urban marginalized like waste pickers and scrap dealers, along with working closely with policymakers, students, parents, teachers, elected representatives, municipalities, residents welfare associations (RWAs) and the police.

Here is a snapshot of the interview.
