Olivia and Carter Ries
Olivia and her brother Carter started their own nonprofit called One More Generation (OMG) in 2009 in an effort to help save endangered species for at least One More Generation… and beyond. Shortly after staring OMG the BP Gulf oil spill happened and the two got involved in the animal rescue efforts. It was while they were delivering the supplies they collected in the Gulf that they learned first hand how environmental threats were also harming the animals and how plastic pollution was one of the biggest environmental threats facing humans and animals alike globally.
Upon returning from the Gulf, the two spent the next five months educating themselves on the issue and then they hired two teachers and a retired principal and authored their award winning Plastic and Recycling Awareness Curriculum.
Their latest efforts to raise awareness about plastic pollution is their recently launched OneLessStraw Pledge Campaign which aims to raise awareness to the fact that in America alone we are using an estimated 500-million single use plastic straws every single day with none are getting recycled. So far their campaign has received over 3,000 pledges from over 45 countries and they have garnered the support of over 300 partner organizations from around the world who are helping to spread the word about the need to get involved and say no to single use plastic straws.
