Landfills continue to be a favored means to dispose of waste in the U.S. and Canada, where land is abundant. But, environmental groups are increasingly drawing attention to pollution concerns from the facilities, especially fugitive gas emissions. Landfills are a major source of methane, which is about 80 times more potent than carbon dioxide emissions over 20 years from a climate-warming perspective. New technologies are maturing to address those emissions, but are operators willing to adopt them? And how can regulators ensure best practices are used to address methane emissions?
Jacob Wallace, editor of Waste Dive, explores these issues with experts in this growing arena.
