Scott Kaufman, a former research associate of the Earth Engineering Center, Columbia University will moderate this panel. He was also a Professor of Industrial Ecology at Columbia University’s Earth and Environmental Engineering department. His research includes paper recycling in North America and quantifying the sustainability of waste management systems using both recycling rates and waste-to-energy recovery rates. Shawn L. Otto is the Author of Fool Me Twice: Fighting the Assault on Science in America, where he wrote about opposition to waste treatment technologies like waste-to-energy in the U.S. The book won 2012 Minnesota Book Award and has been referred to as one of the most important books published in America in the last decade. He is also an award winning filmmaker, speaker and the Co-founder and Producer of the U.S. Presidential Science Debates. Dr. Eileen Berenyi is the Founder and President of Governmental Advisory Associates, where she consults and publishes about waste management. Their publications can be downloaded by clicking here. Jill Boughton is the President and CEO of W2Worth Innovations. She was also the President and CEO of Sustainable WasteResources International (SWRI), before which, she led a corporate-wide effort called “Waste-to-Worth” at Procter and Gamble’s global product development team emphasizing on disruptive and transformational innovation. She is some times referred to as the “Queen of Waste”.
Mike Biddle is the Founder and President of MBA Polymers, President of Waste Free Oceans Americas and well known TED Speaker (his TED talk). He is the recipient of 2012 Gothenburg Award for Sustainable Development, sometimes called the Nobel Prize for Environment and many other awards. MBA Polymers is a world leading recycler of plastics from complex waste streams.
Luis Diaz is the President of CalRecovery Inc. During over 30 years in the solid waste management field, Dr. Diaz pioneered the integration of solid waste systems, which is now the standard for all new waste management systems. Dr. Diaz has more than 350 publications and has co-authored 15 books. He is the Editor-in-Chief of Waste Management, Consulting Editor for BioCycle, and Chair of the Working Group on Developing Countries of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA).
David A. McCarthy is the Principal and Co-Founder of JUM Global, LLC. Mr. McCarthy brings 15 years of developing strategic partners for independently funded projects to JUM Global. David works with JAX Utilities Management, where they design and construct landfills. He has been involved in the launch of multiple start-up divisions and companies, as President, CEO and Director, successfully establishing national marketing partners, securing investment capital, and creating new vertical market opportunities and brand development. He also has years of experience working with different energy related national and international government agencies.
