The waste sector is the third largest source of methane emissions globally. According to the Solid Waste and Circular Economy Hub, in Latin America and the Caribbean, solid waste generation in 2021 reached 230.47 Mton. Of this total, approximately 46% was accumulated in landfills, equivalent to 106,016 Mton of total generation. Organic solid waste is a considerable source of methane emissions, a greenhouse gas with a global warming potential more than 80 times higher than carbon dioxide. Methane is estimated to have contributed approximately 0.5°C to global warming to date.
This webinar focuses on initiatives in the LAC region to prevent methane emissions through proper treatment of organic waste, thereby reducing the adverse impacts on health and the environment.
El sector de los residuos es la tercera fuente de emisiones de metano a nivel mundial. Según el Hub de Residuos Sólidos y Economía Circular, en América Latina y el Caribe, la generación de residuos sólidos en 2021 alcanzó las 230,47 Mton. De este total, aproximadamente el 46% se acumuló en rellenos sanitarios, lo que equivale a 106,016 Mton de la generación total. Los residuos sólidos orgánicos son una fuente considerable de emisiones de metano, un gas de efecto invernadero con un potencial de calentamiento global más de 80 veces superior al del dióxido de carbono. Se calcula que el metano ha contribuido aproximadamente 0,5 ºC al calentamiento global hasta la fecha.
Este seminario web se centra en iniciativas en la región de ALC para prevenir las emisiones de metano mediante el tratamiento adecuado de los residuos orgánicos, reduciendo así los impactos adversos sobre la salud y el medio ambiente.
