The focus on chemical recycling has intensified in the recent past. Many around the world are looking at it as a solution to mixed waste streams.

But, what is chemical recycling and how does it differ from recovery and mechanical recycling? 

We try to cover several such aspects of Chemical Recycling in this panel, moderated by Adam Read.

We will discuss opportunities to boost recycling rates and enable new materials to be targeted by Chemical Recycling. We will also discuss the barriers to wider implementation, including costs, perceptions and stakeholder interests. Finally, we will reflect on where chemical recycling fits into a circular economy and a revised waste hierarchy and its potential use in all geographies and locations.

SPEAKERS

Paula Luu, Project Director, Closed Loop Partners

Paula is a Project Director at Closed Loop Partners, an investment and advisory services firm focused on building the circular economy. She manages research projects and cross-brand collaborations in packaging and apparel recycling, evaluating technologies and accelerating investment and speed to market for solutions that are both safe and circular. Paula has worked across sectors and along the supply chain in various operations and marketing roles. She began her career in water policy and later launched a startup that upcycled textile waste and employed women coming home from prison. Before joining Closed Loop Partners, she worked in operations and sourcing roles for brands including Nike, Amazon, and Starbucks. She received her bachelors from Cal Berkeley and her MBA and MS at the University of Michigan.

Adrian Haworth, Sales and Marketing Director, Recycling Technologies

Adrian Haworth was the Sales and Marketing Director of Recycling Technologies from 2013 to 2019 and continues as a consultant to the company. His focus was the introduction of RT’s new technology to chemically recycle residual waste plastic into petrochemical feedstocks and other valuable commodities. Prior to that he spent 33 years with GE Energy in various roles globally including; Engineering, Operations, Sales and Regional Management concluding as the Field Marketing Director, Europe. His experience covers evaluation and development of technologies including CCGT, Gasification, Distributed CHP, Smart Grids, Solar, Wind, Storage, and more recently Chemical Recycling. Adrian recently founded Stratergy Ltd., as a medium to assist start-ups in the energy and waste sector.

MODERATOR

Adam Read, Director of External Affairs, SUEZ Recycling & Recovery

Adam Read is the moderator of this interaction. He is the Director of External Affairs at SUEZ Recycling & Recovery. Adam has specialized in waste management policy development, strategic decision-making, behaviour change, procurement and training for the last 19 years, first as a municipal waste management officer, then as a University based researcher, and for the last 12 years as a consultant working globally on waste services and strategies.
