Globally, tackling food waste management is an urgent challenge demanding innovative solutions. Urban areas contribute significantly, accounting for 50–60% of the colossal 1.3 billion tons of food wasted annually, leading to substantial economic losses and severe environmental and health risks like greenhouse gas emissions and soil degradation. City councils worldwide are taking proactive measures, implementing policies such as mandatory composting programs and waste segregation regulations, to drive change.
Despite challenges, transformative opportunities exist through government-led initiatives and sustainable practices. Integrating innovative technologies like composting and anaerobic digestion into comprehensive waste management solutions can divert organic waste from landfills, creating valuable resources. Public-private partnerships and community engagement are essential for mobilizing resources and fostering collaboration. Addressing global food waste requires concerted efforts from all stakeholders. Education, awareness campaigns, and policy interventions play crucial roles in promoting circularity and resource recovery. By working together, we can create a more sustainable and resilient urban future.

Our webinar, “Food Waste Management for Urban Areas – Resource Recovery & Circularity,”  discusses how to contribute to shaping global food waste management.
